13 October: Speed riding - one more session!!

We have been making maximum use of the great snow base at Ruapehu - and our season passes. We think there is another good chance for perfect speed riding weather and a few more new Nano enthusiasts are going to the mountain.

School holiday SPECIAL

Anderson, Lukas, Dan, Tom and Josh at CheltenhamAnderson, Lukas, Dan, Tom and Josh at Cheltenham

Many local kids have got into kite surfing recently - and they are doing really well! As a result, we had many requests for special rates for students' kite boarding lessons.

Usually, stage 1 (beginner) kite boarding lessons are $160 per person. During the October 2008 school holidays we are offering a special of $120 per person. Here is how you book:

Speed Riding session 15-16 September

The weather is looking great for Ruapehu 15-16 September. Not much wind, sunny and on Monday / Tuesday the ski slopes are always quite empty. We are thinking about spending Monday at Whakapapa Far West. On Tuesday, we could go up Turoa and walk to the top and speed ride from the crater lake. Join us! Call me on (021) 727 013

NEW NZ Online XC League!

Leonardo online competition

To make our NZ XC league more interesting, we have been talking to Manolis who runs the Leonardo online XC web site and can now announce:

NZ online XC League is up and running!

The idea is to give everybody, especially the less experienced pilots a chance to learn from other pilots' long flights, to create more interest in XC flying, to inspire pilots to try a flight or a site someone else has flown from, (to show off mercilessly should you be proud of a great flight) and to keep everyone posted on how the competition is going.

August 28 speed riding session

Weather permitting, we are planning our next speed riding session at Ruapehu later this week, 28-30 August 2008.

If you would like to join us for a FREE TRIAL, please contact us asap to find out where and when. Best is to call Reuben on his cell phone on 0274-727 013 or on the landline at 09-446 0020.

On the day, you can have a go on with a Nano on a practicing slope, learn how to inflate, launch and maybe fly. Give Reuben a call!

SupAir harness with light buckles

SupAir safety notice

Some recent SupAir harnesses may have issues with the locking system of the leg and T-bar buckles which may need to be exchanged. Wings & Waves can do these alterations in Auckland - in most cases.

Wings & Waves on snowTV!

On our recent trip to Ruapehu, we met up with the guys from snow.co.nz to show them what speed flying is all about. Here is what they published on their web site, including a nice video.

Speed Flying 101 As far as nice days go, Whakapapa Ski field couldn’t have turned on the charm any more. We arrived to gentle winds from the north, with not a cloud in sight. Fresh snow from 2 nights ago had ensured all facilities were operating. We’ve organized a slightly different day on the snow today, not your usual method of getting down the hill. Today we try to use a “Gin Canopy”.

GIN Bobcat is in NZ!

GIN Bobcat, the ideal toy for

  • nil wind fast flying
  • strong wind soaring
  • mountain descents in all sorts of conditions

Jeff's first 2 flights in nil wind and tail wind

  • easy launch even with tail wind
  • great, precise handling
  • easy landing: Bobcat converts speed into lift when flaired
  • variable speed and glide thanks to trimmers: choose a fast descent or soaring performance!
In NZ now! Try it - you will LOVE it!

Jeff Ripley had his first flight on the new GIN Bobcat yesterday - straight out of the box to the beach. Not that there was any wind as forecasted, but still, there was no way to hold him back. See the YouTube video below!

You may have been (wisely!) cautious with mini-paragliders and other so called speed glider so far; we have been holding back as it has been clear to us that those gliders currently on the market do need to be handled with care and are only for expert pilots. Still, we have been having lots of fun on the 19 sqm (16 projected) Yeti mini-praglider.

Most of the so called speed gliders were small, fun, scaled down paragliders, which displayed the up- but also the down-sides of badly overloaded paragliders. Higher speed than normal, high, sudden stall point, over-eager turning, great sink and momentum in turns, low pitch and roll stability has caught out quite a few people and made others shy away from the idea of such gliders. These gliders were actually as fast as they could be, as they all started out as a slowish DHV 1 glider.

The Bobcat is very different: It is NOT a scaled down paraglider, but neither a speed riding glider or a parachute.
