Two quite different sports have been called Speed Flying in recent years: One is what we now call Speed Riding on skis. The other is Speed Flying, as in foot-launching small paragliders.
Speed Riding is a new winter flying sport created by skiers, paraglider pilots and skydivers looking for a new sensation and to create a link between gliding by ski and gliding through the air. For a few years, pioneers have used skydiving parachutes or modified kites.

Foot-launched Speed Flying was developed from parachuting and paragliding. Days, too windy to fly normal sized paragliders, motivated pilots and designers to find ways to expand the wind strength in which paragliders can operate. At the same time, parachutist became keen to foot-launch parachutes, seeking the thrill of flying fast close to the terrain.
