Speed Riding is a new winter flying sport created by skiers, paraglider pilots and skydivers looking for a new sensation and to create a link between gliding by ski and gliding through the air. For a few years, pioneers have used skydiving parachutes or modified kites.

Linking the flight of a glider with the turn of your skis adds a new dimension to the descent from a mountain! It’s an exhilarating sport which will excite and fascinate both participants and spectators. The sport equally appeals to esperienced skiers who enjoy off-piste skiing, exploring runs and peaks formerly un-suitable for skiing as to paragliding pilots and parachutists.

This new sport has taken the slope by storm, quickly attracting more and more enthusiasts as the buzz of excitement sweeps across Europe! First in France, where Speed Flying was born, but now also in Switzerland and Austria with Italy and Germany not far behind. During this process, the sport evolved from an utterly crazy and experimental stage to an activity suitable for experienced skiers and / or paragliding pilots, using carefully designed, second generation equipment.

With careful instructions from the experts from France and Wings & Waves in NZ, this is a fun activity with no more risk than fast skiing and mountaineering.

Gin is the leading manufacturer for speed gliders. Much as in paragliding, Gin produces products which are tuned and perfected to the max, with the maximum expertise going into their careful designs.

The Gin developing team, especially Francois Bon from France and his team, have pioneered speed flying all around the world. He has designed the gliders, organised competitions, set up training programs and designated speed flying areas all over Europe.

Wings & Waves doing the same for New Zealand: Francois Bon has visited NZ and done a tour around the country with the W&W team to pioneer slopes, teach the W&W instructors and show NZ what speed flying is all about.

The Equipment

Gin Nanos are the most advanced, yet simplest and even reasonably priced speed flying gliders. The Gin Nano 08 speed riding glider is the 3rd generation development. Since Francois and the Gin Team have been into this sport for years, they are a few steps of development ahead of every one else.

The 2009 model is the 4th Gin speedrider generation; it is thought through into every single details of safety, handling and practicality. Simply impressive. At the same time, the entire equipment with glider, harness, bag (including ski holders, stuff bag etc) is light and practical; it only weighs around 4 kg all up, the glider by itself only 2.6 to 3 kg depending on size. Get a quote for equipment. Email us! Prices range from $1,500 for speed riding gliders to $2,900 for a set with an intro course, harness and bag and everything you need. We offer a demo price set up for each region in NZ.

The other speed riding glider which is showing great success is the Swing Savage. First place in a recent Red Bull race, shows the quality of this new glider.
